Donato Hanover likely headed to Yonkers Trot

David Scharf told harnessracing.com Thursday morning that he expects Hambletonian winner Donato Hanover to be entered in the upcoming Yonkers Trot at Yonkers Raceway. “If the draw was today, he’d be in,” said Scharf of the second jewel of trotting’s Triple Crown which has eliminations scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 18 and a $1 million (est.) final Saturday, Aug. 25.

Scharf said he expects trainer Steve Elliott to take Donato Hanover to either Freehold Raceway or Gaitway Farms to train the horse over a half-mile track before making a final decision. Elliott is based at Showplace Farm, which has a five-eighths mile oval. The draw for the Yonkers Trot is Tuesday, Aug. 14.

Elliott told harnessracing.com on Wednesday afternoon that he received a lot of congratulations and handshakes on arriving at Showplace Monday morning. Scharf said his celebration Saturday night following the race was having dinner in New York City.

Scharf added that with Donato Hanover likely starting in the Yonkers Trot, that would mean the 3-year-old colt would not be shipped to Du Quoin for the World Trotting Derby over Labor Day weekend, giving him a week off before a probable start in the $1 million Canadian Trotting Classic eliminations Sept. 8 at Mohawk.
