Donato Hanover notches 17th in a row

Donato Hanover coasted to his 17th straight victory and ninth in as many starts this year with an effortless 1:52 victory in the first of two $136,000 Bluegrass divisions for 3-year-old colt trotters Saturday afternoon at The Red Mile. With Ron Pierce driving, Donato Hanover coasted to the win which pushed his seasonal earnings to more than $1.9 million.

Pierce got away first from post two with Donato Hanover but yielded in the first turn to Rune and driver Marcus Johansson. At the :28.1 quarter pole Pierce re-took the lead and the outcome from there was never in doubt as he coasted through a :56.3 half and 1:24.2 three-quarters. Rune was able to hold for second with John Campbell's Flirtin Man third.

Trained by Steve Elliott, the winning son of Yankee Glide is owned by David Scharf, Paul Bordogna's Golden Touch Stable, Steven Arnold and the Donato Hanover syndicate. He is the first trotter ever to surpass $2.5 million in career earnings during his 3-year-old season.

"He's just a good horse, and we hope we can stay lucky," said Elliott in the winner's circle. "Good horses have a way of finding a way of winning. He's a smart horse and takes care of himself."

Ten other trotters--with likely relieved connections that they drew away from Donato Hanover--lined up behind the gate in the second $137,000 division and it was Mythical Lindy, the runner-up behind Donato in the Stanley Dancer Memorial and fourth-place finisher behind him most recently in the Canadian Trotting Classic final, who posted the 1:53.2 victory.

Driven by David Miller, Mythical Lindy bested Bayside Volo and Ron Pierce with Photo Maxx third for Marcus Johansson.

Jim Arledge Jr. trains Mythical Lindy for owners Thomas York Jr. and Joe Sbrocco. This was his fourth win in nine starts, increasing his career earnings to more than $605,000.

"He's a good horse and tries very hard," said Miller in the winner's circle. "(Possibly taking on Donato Hanover in the Kentucky Futurity) is an awful lot to ask though."
