Veteran driver Don Irvine Jr. was taken off his mounts at Indiana Downs Saturday, Aug. 23, and his license has been suspended by the Indiana Horse Racing Commission (IHRC).
Irvine, racing on a probationary license, will be unable to drive while the IHRC and Indiana Gaming Commission investigate an incident which occurred last week at Hoosier Park’s casino.
Indiana Downs presiding judge Tim Schmitz confirmed Irvine’s suspension, but deferred any further questions to IHRC executive director Joe Gorajec, who could not be reached on Monday, Aug. 25. Irvine had been racing on a probationary license since March 2007.
A six-time leading driver at Hoosier Park, Irvine did not apply for a license in 2006 after being involved in an accident and failing a field sobriety test in late March. He was granted the probationary license after completing a 12-week program for alcohol abuse and enrolling in an after care program.
Irvine has won more than 1,000 races at Hoosier Park and has also earned multiple driving titles at Indiana Downs. He has collected more than 6,800 victories in his career and in excess of $33 million in purses. The 57-year-old reinsman had scored 75 wins this season, driving Indiana Sire Stakes champions Robin I Scoot and EJ’s Copperstone.
