The outstanding freshman trotting gelding Donttellmywife not only remained undefeated after he won his $50,915 division of the New York Sire Stakes Tuesday afternoon at Monticello Raceway, but in the process he obliterated the former track record of 2:03 when Jeff Gregory guided the altered son of Malabar Man-Nowerland Sweet home first in a 2:00.1 clocking. The previous mark for 2-year-old trotting geldings was set in 2006 when Billy Parker Jr. reined High Five to victory.
Over $200,000 was on the line for freshman trotting colts and geldings in four New York Sire Stakes trots at the Mighty M on Tuesday. Other winners on the card included Calchips Brute in 2:02.2; Monaghan Man in 2:03.1; and Rambling Chaos in 2:03.1.
But the afternoon belonged to George Ducharmre, Nick Oliva and Shannon DiAntonio’s Donttellmywife, who notched his fifth consecutive victory while raising his seasonal bankroll to over $101,000. Ducharme also doubles as the gelding’s trainer. Grouped with other standout freshmen in his division, Gregory kept Donttellmywife in third position in the early going and then after the half shadowed leader Dillar A Dollar (Dan Daley) until midway around the final turn at which point Diller A Dollar made a costly break. Donttellmywife, who was on the outside at the time, trotted to the lead and held off another fine trotting colt, Judge Joe (D.R. Ackerman) who also came into the contest undefeated. Diller A Dollar regained his stride and finished third, albeit some 20 lengths behind the winner. The aforementioned colts who finished one-two-three were such stickouts in the race that they produced one of the smallest trifecta payoffs here when their combination of 4-2-1 was worth just $9. “He’s a good one and I believe he can go with the best (colts in the country),” driver Gregory told Donttellmywife’s owners who were in the winner's circle for the presentation.
Formerly known as Allison Sweet Man, the name change to Donttellmywife was precipitated by co-owner Nick Oliva’s wife Dawna after Nick and his partners purchased Allison Sweet Man and Nick failed to mention it to Dawna.
But Dawna found out when the group was in Nick’s ‘Italian Market’ in Milford, Mass. and they were inadvertently talking about a name change and Dawna, who didn’t know of the purchase, overheard the conversation and blurted out “why not call him Donttellmywife.” Ducharme, DiAntonio and Nick laughed aloud and agreed to Dawna’s suggestion and thus Allison Sweet Man had a name change. In another $50,915 division Diane (and husband Jerry) Giuliano were proud of their Credit Winner-Dusty Girl colt, Calchips Brute, after Jimmy Morrill Jr. gunned the trotter to the lead and they remained unchallenged on the front end and trotted away to a nine-length victory over R Little E, driven by Bill Bailey. It was the second consecutive victory for Calchips Brute who is trained by Trond Smedshammer. Cory Braden made it two in a row with Monaghan Man when he reined the Malabar Man-Corfad Dream gelding to an easy five-length victory over East Creek Otto.
Trained by Ray Van Dreason Monaghan Man is owned by Van Dreason, Alan J. and Gus Johnston, and James Kennedy.
A final $50,015 NYSS split was one for the little guys when John Cross reined Paul and Karen Bishop’s homebred Rambling Chaos to victory over H And M’s Hit (Claude Huckabone III). Rambling Chaos, a terror on the NYSS county Fair circuit this summer with five wins at five different tracks, won for the sixth time this year and had his connections smiling. In the winner's circle when Cross was asked about the gelding's sire, Piranha Pat, he smiled and said that he was a son of Garland Lobell but an out-and-out laugh came when Cross was asked about Dabindabeau, the sire of the dam Rambling Beauty. Obviously overjoyed with the $25,000 payday earned by Rambling Chaos, Cross chuckled and said “Dabindabeau….. he’s from the hills of
