Earlier this month officials from 12 harness tracks met to discuss a proposal from Standardbred breeder, owner and harness track owner Jeff Gural calling for amending the conditions of many major stakes races so horses stay on the track beyond their 3-year-old season. Many believe changing conditions is a longshot, but Dennis Dowd, senior vice president of racing at the Meadowlands, told New York Times writer Bill Finley he thinks it is possible. “No one wants to be out there alone on this, but I think it’s going to happen,” Dowd told Finley. “I think we can get enough tracks to do this, and if we do, breeders are going to have to say we need to take a look at racing this horse another year.” To read Finley’s column in the Friday edition of The New York Times, click here.
