Dream dominates in Damsel

Fancy A Dream followed up a dominant win in round one of the Damsel Pacing Series with another authoritative victory in Sunday afternoon’s $70,500(C) final at Woodbine Racetrack.

With Mario Baillargeon doing the driving, the 4-year-old daughter of Camluck-Fancy Table floated off the gate from post seven and landed sixth at the hotly contested opening quarter of :25.4. Baillargeon continued to sit patiently as Alerts Big Girl took over the lead and put up the opening half in a wicked :54.4. As the field neared three-quarters, Fancy A Dream was sitting third-over and fifth and watched Alerts Big Girl trip the beam in 1:24.3.

When the field turned for home, Dee Dee Blue rolled out off cover and challenged the pacesetter with Fancy A Dream following hot on her heels. At the midpoint of the stretch, Baillargeon asked his mare for more and she drew off convincingly for a 4 1/4-length tally in 1:52.4. Dee Dee Blue held on for second with Mommy Robin Q recovering after an early miscue to grab the show spot.

"I was really happy when I looked up and saw the first quarter in :25.4," said winning driver Mario Baillargeon from the Woodbine winner's circle. "She was really good at the end. She's a big strong mare. I think by this fall, if she stays healthy, she could be an open mare."

The victory was a lifetime-best clocking for the David Keyes trainee and the third win in five tries this season. She boosted her career earnings to more than $190,000 for Keyes who co-owns along with wife Julie and father Norman of Mississauga, Ont. (WEG)
