Drivers' Championship ends in a dead heat

Return Home
July 30, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The First Annual $32,000 Drivers' Championship Sunday at Tioga Downs was a huge success that wound up in a first-place tie between Yannick Gingras and Brian Sears. With first-place money of $18,000 and second-place money of $5,000, each of the two "dead-heat" drivers will receive $11,500

Jody Jamieson came in third ($3,000) with the other drivers finishing in the following order ($1,000 each): David Miller, Tim Tetrick, Tony Morgan, Ron Pierce, Andy Miller, and Mike Simons.

“Mr. Consistent” Sears proved that name in the contest, being the only driver to pick up points in each of the six divisions of the Drivers’ Championship races. Gingras posted two wins in the divisions but was hurt by being out of the points in three of the divisions.

Canadian star Jamieson started off the day on the right foot by lighting up the tote board with a 33-1 longshot in the first division. Tetrick, Miller and Morgan each picked up one win in the competition while Gingras picked up the double through competition races.

Also highlighting the Drivers’ Championship was seven divisions of New York Sire Stakes for 2-year old colt and gelding trotters. The recent private purchase by Martin Scharf of Ace High Hall proved very impressive by setting a new track record for 2-year old colt trotters in 1:58.2 with Tetrick in the bike. Mark Ford trains the freshman son of Conway Hall and now sports a record of one win and two second in three lifetime starts with earnings of over $21,000.

The Southern Tier Harness Horsemen’s association presented local animal shelter Stray Haven with a check for $3,000 to help build a new equine rescue shelter. Owners of Stray Haven were on hand in the winner’s circle to receive the check and were extremely excited when Tioga Downs announced that Jeffrey Gural, Chairman of American Racing and Entertainment was going to match the donation to help with the shelter’s cause.

Through the generosity of all nine drivers in the First Annual Drivers’ Championship, together they raised over $3,000 that will be donated to the charities of their choice. Tioga Downs will also match 100 percent of the donations that they make for their selected charities to bring the grand total to more than $6,000.

Tioga Downs would like to once again thank all of their sponsors that made this day possible: All Events Engraving, Blue Chip Farms, Delaware County Fair, Embroidery Unlimited, The Horsemen And Fair World Magazine, LP Ciminelli, MH EBY Trailers, NTRA-HTA Purchasing Program, Oneida Print Shop, Panda Air, Souther Tier Harness Horsemen’s Association, Towne Law Office, Tracy Yeagle Hay & Straw, YouBet.com, and Gray & Associates.
