Drivers on the road all day

Drivers Yannick Gingras and George Brennan have a chance Saturday to do what only Mike Lachance has been able to accomplish in history: win three stakes races in one day at three different racetracks. Gingras told harnessracing.com that he’d “like to win them all, but that’ll be a tough task.”

Lachance’s historic trifecta came March 25, 1989, with wins in the Overbid Series final at the Meadowlands (Sweet Sharon), a leg of the George Morton Levy Memorial Series at Yonkers (Matt’s Scooter) and division of the North American Pacing Series at Freehold (No No No).

Both Gingras and Brennan have drives Saturday afternoon in the New Hampshire Sweepstakes at Rockingham Park and evening mounts in the Rooney final at Yonkers and the New Jersey Classic and Miss New Jersey at the Meadowlands.

“I am going to have to do a lot of work and get some luck,” said Gingras, who currently ranks fourth in wins and fifth in earnings in North America. “In those kinds of races I’d be happy to pick up a check in every one of them. For me, that’ll be a nice day. I’d like to win them all but I think that’ll be a tough task. It’ll be a pretty busy day.”

Gingras gave an advance accounting of his Saturday travels: “We have baby races in the morning at the Meadowlands. Then we’ll rush to the Teterboro airport (on Route 17 in New Jersey) and fly on a private plane to Rockingham. Go from there back to the Meadowlands. Then drive from the Meadowlands to Yonkers.

“I was going to come back (to the Meadowlands for the last couple races) but I thought, ‘you know what, I’m going to stay at Yonkers,’” he added with a laugh.

Gingras said besides he and Brennan, Ron Pierce, John Campbell and Andy Miller will be flying on the charter plane to Rockingham Park. Other drivers making multiple stops on Saturday include David Miller, who is scheduled to drive at Freehold and the Meadowlands, as well as Mohawk in Toronto for the Burlington. Daniel Dube also has a Freehold/Meadowlands schedule before he heads to Yonkers for the Rooney.

“And Rockingham wanted us to get there early to race other horses, but we have those baby races. It’s hard to miss those,” Gingras said. “And there are five of us, so they’d be in trouble if we all leave.”

As for Gingras’s chances Saturday, here is his quick analysis:

JK Cu Later in the New Hampshire Sweepstakes—“That’ll be tough (because he drew the nine hole). If he had drawn inside I think he could because he’s a real, real fast horse. If they mix it up early, maybe because he’s real sharp right now.”

Mattdultery in the Rooney final—“He has a shot. He raced really good last week. He was two-fingers, which is pretty good for him because he used to be real grabby. He has as good a shot…believe me he can go and if he gets the right trip he’ll be right there.”

Artistic Ideal in the Miss New Jersey—“She’s OK. I don’t think she can go with the best ones, maybe, but she’ll show up and get a piece.”

Radio City in the New Jersey Classic—“I was impressed with that horse last week. Monte (trainer Monte Gelrod) told me he’d be real good and he was. He drew the nine hole which is not going to be a great spot for him. It’s not out of the question but he is going to need a couple things go his way.”
