January 05, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The drivers for Monticello Raceway’s sixth edition of its Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Pace is now set. The only things that remain are the driving assignments and post positions and those too, will be finalized on Tuesday when racing secretary Eric Warner puts the Friday, Jan. 12 card together.

Earlier this week outstanding horseman George Teague Jr., who has developed such great champions as Rainbow Blue, Total Truth, Isabella Blue Chip, Western Ace and Future Destiny, declared that he would like to be among the participants in the MLK Pace.

In previous seasons Teague had consistently inquired about participating but with his busy schedule he couldn’t find the time. However, he said that this year he will be able to drive in the event.

Joining Teague and also coming up from Delaware will be veteran horseman George Polk Jr. And from the Freehold, N.J. area, Alan Johnson and Dennis Watson are looking forward participate as is James Ofarrow and George Newell Jr. who’ll be travel from the greater New York City area just to compete.

And with the addition of local teamsters Bobby Williams Jr. and Richard Ellis Jr., Warner now has a field of eight African American drivers who are set to compete in the event which honors the memory of the great civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“As in life one never knows what the future holds and for that reason we have an also eligible driver in Donald Simmonds. If needed he’ll get the first call,” Warner said. (Monticello)
