Driver wins 6 at Northfield

December 29, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

North America’s leading harness driver, Tony Morgan, continued his march toward 1,000 wins this year by picking up six at Northfield Park Thursday night. That put Morgan at 999 wins for the 2006 season. Morgan got off to a quick start when he won the night’s first race with 9-5 maiden pacer Dale Junior for JML Stables and trainer John Sokol. That gave Morgan 994 wins on the year as he attempts to become just the second driver in history to win 1,000 races in a single year. Walter Case Jr. (1,077) turned the trick in 1988.

Morgan got his second win of the night when he steered Charter Bryant’s CB Three ($7.80) to victory in the seventh race and picked up win number three (#996 this season) in the next race with Edmund Kresty’s Bahama Bound ($3.60). The Troy, Ohio, native made it three straight with Nancy Amos’ trotter Willmania ($3.80).

Morgan fell short with 14-year-old pacer Wholehearted, a horse who was making his 307th (and final) career start, and then picked up seasonal win #998, his fifth on the night, with Donald Shaffer’s Razer Blade ($4.60). He wrapped up the evening by winning the finale with Major Cadet for Ricky Mapes.

Morgan is scheduled for 14 drives at Northfield Friday before returning to his Delaware base at Dover Downs on Saturday to wrap up the year. Northfield’s first race post time is 7PM Eastern on Friday. (Northfield Park press release)
