Drivin' Miss Rudee right into Colonial winner's circle

Drivin’ Miss Rudee led every step to score a sharp 1:51.2 victory in Colonial Downs Wednesday night feature, a $10,000 fillies and mares winners over pace.

Drivin’ Miss Rudee and driver Chris Page were able to steal away to the lead through soft opening fractions of :27.1 and :56.2 with minimal pressure from pocket tripper Scott’s Sweety while favored Camphor Hanover raced four lengths back and third choice Look Lyndsay languished in last.

The field continued single file around most of the turn as Drivin’ Miss Rudee led unchallenged through three-quarters in 1:24.4 and turned for home with a 1 ¼-length advantage over Scott’s Sweety.

Even money favorite Camphor Hanover made a first-over move approaching the quarter pole and Look Lyndsay followed her but they remained three to four lengths back at the top of the stretch.

Drivin’ Miss Rudee had plenty left for Colonial’s 1,300-foot stretch, powering home in :26.3, but she needed every ounce of that energy because Camphor Hanover and Look Lyndsay both uncorked :26 flat closing kicks, with Camphor Hanover’s rally falling just a neck short at the wire.

Look Lyndsay was another 1 ¼ lengths back in third.

Wednesday’s win was the fourth of the year and 29th overall for Drivin’ Miss Rudee. The 6-year-old Walton Hanover mare increased her lifetime bankroll to $229,459 with the win. Drivin’ Miss Rudee’s string of success at Colonial goes back to the 2004 2-year-old filly Virginia Breeders’ final.
