Dr. Jerome M. Rini, who once operated Mac-Jay Stables in partnership with Jack MacDonald, died Thursday, July 2. He was 84. Dr. Rini was associated with such stars as Castle Knight p,4,1:59.4f ($140,209); Bye Time p,6,2:01.1f ($173,180) and Phyllis Diller 4,2:04.2f ($28,756). He received the Appreciation Award from the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association in 2003 for his long-standing support of the sport and his many years as an active and successful Standardbred owner. Professionally, Dr. Rini was a surgeon. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American Cancer Society. He was a member of the Robert M. Zollinger Society, the Ohio State Surgical Association and the Ohio State University Alumni Association. He was also a member of the U.S. Trotting Association and Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association. Dr. Rini is survived by his wife of 61 years, Annetta; three daughters, Jacqueline (David) Tilley, Roberta (Jerry) Giles and Mary Jo (Doyle) Bross; four grandchildren, Lauren, Steven, Emily and Andrea; a sister, Burnadette Sweeney; and several nieces and nephews.
