Drug scandal in Indy

A Story in the Dec. 6 edition of the Anderson (Ind.) Herald-Bulletin newspaper says the Indiana Horse Racing Commission and Indiana State Police have found evidence that horses were given tranquilizer medications to underperform so they could latter be bet at big odds.



The story said that over the past two years traces of the tranquilizer Dormesedan were found in three horses, all winners. Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings said there is an allegation that one horse owner won $18,000 on a single race.



The story said the investigation began in 2003, when drugs not approved by the Federal Drug Administration were found in the vehicles of veterinarians. Investigators found 11 syringes that belonged to one vet and another vet had pages torn out from a treatment log book.



Veterinarian Elaine Gillis has had charges filed against her for dispensing a controlled substance without a proper state license. The Veterinary Licensing Board earlier this year voted not to suspend her license, the Herald-Bulletin reported.
