Dube wins $15,000 top prize in Harrah's Drivers' Challenge

With four wins, Daniel Dube took home the $15,000 top prize in Sunday’s eight-race $60,000 Drivers’ Challenge at Harrah’s Chester, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Harness Horsemen’s Association. Winning twice each were Yannick Gingras and Tim Tetrick, who earned the second and third-place prizes of $12,000 and $10,000, respectively.

The competition was marred by an early-race accident that resulted in Cat Manzi booking off the rest of his drives. Manzi was driving Allamerican Native in the third contest race when he collided with Urbina Hanover, who had fallen shortly after the start for driver David Miller.

Both drivers were not hurt but Manzi, who just returned from suffering a broken collarbone and fractured ribs in an Aug. 17 spill at the same racetrack, did not return to the sulky. Jim Meittinis replaced Manzi for one drive while Andy Miller climbed into the sulky the rest. All points were credited to Manzi, who earned $6,000 for finishing fifth.

According to Harrah’s Chester race secretary Rick Kane, the eight drivers participating were drawn by lot from a list of 12. The four not chosen include Andy Miller, Brian Sears, Ron Pierce and Tony Morgan, who won last year’s inaugural Drivers’ Challenge.

Rounding out the 2008 Drivers' Challenge field (with prize money in parenthesis) were: David Miller ($8,000); Eric Goodell ($5,000); Dave Palone ($3,000); and George Napolitano Jr. ($1,000).

The drivers all donated their five-percent commissions to Operation Warm, an organization that provides underprivileged children nationwide with winter coats.
