Lease On Life filly EJ’s Copperstone raised her record to three wins in as many starts Monday, August 6 with a two and three-quarter length victory in Indiana Sires Stakes competition. Indiana Downs played host to two $12,000 contests for freshman filly pacers. Viking Contessa collected the second split in 1:56. Driven by Don Irvine Jr., EJ’s Copperstone got away seventh in the field of nine. It wasn’t long before Irvine sent the heavy favorite to the front, brushing to the lead along the backstretch and clicking off a :57.1 opening half. The Steve Gray-trained filly was shuffled to second by Nifty And Thrifty, but racing out of the final turn Irvine pulled the pocket and the duo cruised home in :29.1 to win in a lifetime best 1:55.4. Townline Speedy and Walter Haynes Jr. were second. Nifty And Thrifty, driven by Rocky Loney, raced a distant third. EJ’s Copperstone is owned by breeders L. J. Stone and Phillip Hawk. The first foal of ISS champion E J’s Delite, the filly has earned just over $19,000 in her short career. Fourth choice Viking Contessa paced a speedy final panel to earn her second win in three starts for trainer Trent Stohler Monday afternoon. Driven by Jay Cross, the Mark Johnathan freshman posted a 28 second final panel to win by five and one-half lengths. An Electric Laugh finished second while previously undefeated LBS Scooting Coffee was third. Starting from post eight, Cross settled his filly in fourth along the rail as An Electric Laugh and LBS Scootin Coffee each took turns on the lead. As the field turned for home, Viking Contessa abandoned the pylons and angled out three-wide. The Howard Peterson-owned entry quickly drew away from the field, knocking a full second off her lifetime best in the victory.
