Freshman filly pacers squared off Monday night, October 12 in the third and final preliminary round of Indiana Sires Stakes competition at Indiana Downs. Two $25,000 divisions served as the last opportunity for each of the 20 fillies entered to earn enough points to secure a place in the $125,000 final slated for October 24.
Favorite Electric Presence and Sam Widger won the first $25,000 split in 1:55.4 for trainer Nelson Willis, finishing a head in front of late-closing Lets Go BB and Ricky Macomber, sent off at 20-1. Hoponit and trainer Don Eash were third. The Electric Yankee-Ravishing Hall filly is owned by James Jesk’s Sawgrass Farms LLC. Electric Presence has won five of 10 seasonal starts, taking a new mark with the victory. The filly, a winner of $48,550, skipped the first Indiana Sires Stakes series and final, but has swept each of the three preliminary legs leading up to the second series final.
Third choice Sara’s Lucky Charm and driver Dan Shetler put on an impressive show in the $25,000 second division, taking control early and drawing away at the wire by six and one-quarter lengths in 1:54.4. Fakeutu Bluegrass and Walter Haynes Jr. raced second while second choice Miss Sweetness and Macomber were a distant third. The Electric Yankee-Modern Bobbi filly, trained by Wilbur Eash, set a new lifetime best with the win. Sara’s Lucky Charm is a three-time winner in 2009, accumulating $68,545 in earnings.
