Choosing first among the connections of the three Hambletonian elimination winners at the press conference draw held Tuesday at the Meadowlands, trainer Frank Antonacci chose post two for Crazed for Saturday’s final, while trainer-driver Ray Schnittker selected post one immediately afterward. Trainer Trond Smedshammer finished out the selection of posts for the $1.5 million contest by selecting post three for Atomic Hall Deweycheatumnhowe heads into the Hambletonian final with a perfect 14-for-14 record and was promptly made the overwhelming 2-5 morning-line choice by track handicapper Dave Brower. As for leaving from the inside post, Schnittker said of his early-race strategy, “I’ll see how things shape up, you can’t tell until the gate opens up.”
Crazed was listed as second choice at odds of 5-1, while Atomic Hall is 10-1. Ironically, the Schnittker-trained Make It Happen, who finished fourth in his elim and made the final by virtue of being the fourth-place finisher with the highest lifetime earnings, drew the outside post 10 and was made the longest price at odds of 30-1.
The Hambletonian and Oaks will be televised live on Saturday from 2-3 p.m. on NBC. The Hambletonian is slated to go postward at 2:43 p.m.
