Trainer Bill Elliott will not be allowed to start his trotter Here Comes Herbie in the Canadian Trotting Classic and three pacers in the Nassagaweya this weekend at Mohawk Racetrack. The decision came after a hearing held Wednesday morning by the Ontario Racing Commission after Elliott’s entries were refused by Woodbine Entertainment Group following an elevated TCO2 test on his horse Fightertown Pilot at Mohawk Aug. 31.
The draw was scheduled to take place Tuesday, but it was delayed a day until the ORC hearing. Mohawk director of racing Scott McKelvie told harnessracing.com at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday that he had just received a phone call from the ORC informing him to proceed with the draw minus the Elliott-trained horses; he was given no official explanation of the decision.
McKelvie said 11 sophomore colt trotters were entered in the Trotting Classic, while 18 freshman colt pacers will go postward in the Nassagaweya divisions. That field would have been 21 if Elliott’s eligibles Laughing Art, Running Book and Mr. Market had been allowed to compete.
