A fixture in New England harness racing for more than 40 years, Elmer Smith, 75, will be inducted into the New England Harness Racing Wall of Fame at Plainridge Racecourse on Labor Day, Sept. 7.
Born July 29, 1934 in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, Canada, Smith has been breeding, owning, training and driving horses for more than 50 years, first in the Canadian Maritimes and then the New England racing circuit. He has recorded more than 1,200 driving victories and more than $1.7 million in purses. He was extremely active in the 1970s and 1980s including driving 576 horses in 1979.
Smith will join Paul Battis, Bert Beckwith, Willard Beckwith, Peter Blood, Greg Bowden, Bucky Day, Jim Doherty, Leigh Fitch, Ken Heeney, John Hogan, Gary Kamal, David Marshall, Jim Morrill Sr., Stephen O’Toole, Bruce Ranger and Ted Wing on the Wall of Fame. The members of the Wall of Fame have combined for more than 55,000 driving victories and purses of nearly $167 million.
In addition to the induction ceremonies prior to the racing card, Smith will compete in the Living Legends Driving Challenge with Battis, Willard Beckwith, Blood, Bowden, Doherty, Fitch, Hogan, O’Toole and Ranger. (Plainridge)
