Emotional win for Thomas

Friday afternoon's first race at The Red Mile was an emotional win for Kevin Thomas, as a horse he trains and co-owned with longtime friend Lyle Anderson, who was killed in the plane crash in Lexington a month ago, broke his maiden. Fielders Choice, a 3-year-old son of Garland Lobell, won for driver Ron Pierce in 1:58.4 at odds of 7-1.

"Definitely losing Lyle and Christina (Anderson's girlfriend who was also killed in the crash), what can I say about losing them?" said Thomas. "The first few weeks (after the crash) I really thought I was going to get out, I couldn't stand to look at a horse. But as time goes, you don't think about it every second, but probably every other second. Every time I saw a plane, every time I saw a horse, everything was kind of put in perspective."

"I owned this one with Lyle, and we will play him out a bit, but the rest of them will go through the sale and see what happens there. This colt, when he was two could run off and hide from Berto Primo. Then he had a little trouble but he should have a lot of success now that he's going in the right direction."
