Ghibellini, a 5-year-old son of Pine Chip, captured the Copenhagen Cup Sunday afternoon in Denmark, holding off the US representative Enough Talk in a spirited stretch drive. The US-bred Citation, now racing for Scandinavian owners, finished third.
The 10-year-old Steinlager took the early lead in hte race, but then French driving ace Jean Michel Bazire put Oiseau de Feux in striking position first-over. But Bazire elected to simiply ride on the outside. Meanwhile, Johnny Takter put Citation in the pocket and Enough Talk was second-over behind Oiseau de Feux and Bazire.
On the backstretch JRoberto Andreghetti sent Ghibellini three wide and the trotter quickly advanced. Then in the homestretch he had to battle side-by-side with Enough Talk, driven by Jorgen Sjunnesson. Peter Kleinhans owns Enough Talk and trains him in the US, but left the horse in Sweden following his third-place finish in the Elitlopp.
Ghibellino was timed in a mile rate of 1:56.2 for the 2,011 meter distance (about 1 1/4 miles). He earned approximately $128,000 with the win.
