Trainer Carl Jamieson was shut out in the second leg of the Dream Maker series for 2-year-old pacing colts, as Bob McIntosh pupil, Evening Job, and Erv Miller’s Automatic Slims took the two $20,000(C) splits in a special non-wagering event prior to the main card at Mohawk Monday night. A short field of six freshman lads went to the post at 6:50 tonight in the first Dream Maker contest, and it was Jamieson trainee, Pence Hanover, who set the early fractions. Randy Waples sent Evening Job, a son of Dream Work out of the Presidential Ball mare, Eve Of The Ball, out to overtake at the three-quarter pole, and they quickly opened up a two and a half length lead. Jody Jamieson gave chase in the stretch with Chief of the Beach, but couldn’t catch Evening Job, who came to the wire a length and a half ahead, in 1:55. Bay Of Sharks, trained by Ben Wallace and driven tonight by Mario Baillargeon, hung on for third. This was the first career win in three starts for Evening Job, who is a homebred owned by the Robert McIntosh Stables. Beaten last week by Artists Rally, Mark MacDonald and Automatic Slims got the job done tonight in the series sequel, catching pacesetter Check On Jack (Jack Moiseyev) in the stretch and sailing home a length to the good in an identical clocking of 1:55. Jody Jamieson hustled Artists Rally up late to capture second, with Check On Jack hanging on for third in the short field of six.
Automatic Slims, a son of Bettors Delight-Natchitoches, was a $55,000 yearling purchase last year at Harrisburg for owner Domenic Chiaravalle of Hamilton, Ont. This was his second win in three starts and boosted his earnings to $17,750. Carl Jamieson, who had a total of four entries in this series after Stampede Seelster was scratched sick tonight, ended up with two seconds (Chief of the Beach and Artists Rally), a third (Check On Jack) and a fourth (Pence Hanover).
