Expanded gaming explored again in Kentucky

In the aftermath of Tuesday’s voting in which Maryland residents approved slot machines at five sites including racetracks, Churchill Downs officials announced Thursday that they plan to purse expanded gaming in Kentucky in 2009. The state is home to three Standardbred tracks: The Red Mile, Thunder Ridge and Bluegrass Downs.

"With Maryland voters just approving slots there this week, Kentucky is now the only one of the three states that conduct racing's storied Triple Crown without legislation allowing slot machines," Churchill Downs Inc. president Bob Evans said Thursday in a conference call with investors and analysts yesterday to review third-quarter earnings.

A bill legalizing slot machines at racetracks was already expected to be introduced in the legislature in 2009 by Rep. Greg Stumbo. That bill would allow for slots to be legalized without amending the state constitution. Any constitutional amendment, which would require approve of voters and the legislature, could not be on the ballot until 2010.
