Exploit Caf, the Italian-bred son of the Castleton Farm-bred Toss Out (by Supergill), captured the $575,000 Prix de France at Hippodrome de Vincennes in Paris on Sunday, beating a field that included Offshore Dream, who had captured the Prix d'Amerique two weeks earlier
It was the second big European classic win for Exploit Caf, who won Italy's Lotteria last year.
Exploit Caf was given a magnificent drive by Jean-Michel Bazire as Bazire left the mobile starting gate quickly wth his horse, but then allowed a fast early pace to be set and waited for the stretch drive. Bazire attacked with about a quarter left of the 2,100 meter race (about 1 1/4 miles) and Exploit Caf was up to the challenge. Finishing second was Meaulnes du Corta while the French mare Orla Fun was third. Opal Viking, an early pacesetter, faded to fourth and Offshore Dream was fifth.
The time of the race was 1:10.7, or about 1:54 using the conversion tables.
