Despite a decisive first-heat win by six lengths in a mile-timed rate of 1:56, in the $375,00 Gran Premio Orsi Mangelli at San Siro in Milan, Italy on Nov. 1, the American-bred son of Cantab Hall, Explosive Matter, could not capitalize on that victory in the final, making a break and losing all chance. Driven by Ron Pierce for trainer Noel Daley and owners Adam Victor and Son, the 3-year-old colt was sitting fourth on the rail when he made a break on the far turn, the first time around.
With Explosive Matter out of contention, Mago D'Amore, who had won the other elimination for driver Pietro Gubellini, enjoyed a perfect trip, stalking pacesetter Oracle and won by a length in a mile-rate of 1:57 to earn almost $210,000 (US).
The Orsi Mangelli was the last start for Explosive matter, a winner of over $1.5 million, who will soon take up residence in the stallion barn at Hanover Shoe Farm. The $150,000 Gran Premio Paolo & Orsino Orsi Mangelli Filly race was won with superiority by Madras, a multiple stakes winning Italian-bred filly who was driven by Giuseppe Lombardo Jr. in a mile-rate of 1:57.2 over 1,600 meters.
The North American starter Littlemscantbwrong (Yankee Glide) trained by Per Henriksen and driven by Jorma Kontio finished second.
