Express Merett, a 4-year-old son of Express It (Supergill-Flory Messenger), won the $153,000 Gran Premio d’Europa at the San Siro track in The d’Europa, a race for 4 year olds, had a field of 12. Express Merett is known as a horse who likes the front and as expected he took the lead initially before yielding. Driver Pekka Korpi then re-took the lead and despite challenges, Express Merett held on for a slim victory over Gorniz. Gauginans took third. The mile rate for the 2,100-meter race was 1:58.3 over the five-eighths mile oval. Glen Kronos, a top performer, started poorly. He made a three-wide move on the backstretch and pulled alongside Express Merett, but later tired from the trip.
