Express Ride, who trotted to a 1:53 world record for 4-year-old stallions at The Red Mile in 1987, died at Menhammar Stud farm in Sweden Wednesday. Racing without shoes that day at The Red Mile, Express Ride turned in a breath-taking performance for driver Berndt Lindstedt. At the time the clocking was the fastest ever by a trotter at The Red Mile.

As a 2 year old Express Ride was trained by Hall of Famer George Sholty for the Castleton Farm racing stable and partners Hanley Dawson Jr. and Bill Simon, who served as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under President Richard Nixon. He was also bred by Castleton and Simon, a son of Super Bowl and the great Castleton matron Flory Messenger.

Express Ride won 9 of 14 races as a 2 year old, including the Peter Haughton Memorial, and banked a record $840,328. He won the Breeders Crown at age two as well.

He was exported to stud duty in Sweden and was a successful sire. Among his offspring are the winners of some of Sweden's greatest races.
