Extended meet at Mohawk

Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) today announced that the 2007 Pepsi North America Cup will be hosted at Mohawk Racetrack in Campbellville. For the past two years, this premier event for 3-year-old pacers served as the finale of the Woodbine Standardbred meet. The NA Cup is one of the richest horse races on the continent with a purse of $1.5 million.

Two years ago, WEG changed its focus by creating the Mohawk summer meet. The reception from customers to "Summer Nights" racing at Mohawk prompted the decision to extend the meet in 2007.

"The objective was to create a very customer friendly atmosphere at Mohawk during the summer months and we're quite pleased with the response to the first two years," said Jamie Martin, vice president of Standardbred racing. "Mohawk has enjoyed great success hosting the Breeders Crown in the past and we anticipate beginning on the Victoria Day weekend next year will only add to the momentum heading towards the Pepsi NA Cup and into the summer."

Pending approval by the Ontario Racing Commission, the Mohawk summer meet will increase next year to 105 dates from 80 dates, while the overall number of WEG Standardbred race dates will remain at 260.

Harness racing will start at Mohawk Racetrack on Thursday, May 17, just in time for the May long weekend. The popular fireworks extravaganza will once again light up the night delighting spectators of all ages on the holiday Monday. The meet will run through to Thanksgiving Monday, October 8, 2007, after which the Standardbred horses will return to Woodbine Racetrack.

Races at Mohawk will run from Thursday through Monday with post time at 7:20 p.m.
