Falls For You turned in an impressive two-move effort to capture the $361,225 Armbro Flight Final for older trotting mares Saturday at Mohawk Racetrack in 1:53.4.
With Mark MacDonald doing the driving, the 4-year-old daughter of Yankee Glide-Armbro Niagara left alertly from post six and crossed over in front of the field well before the first turn. At that point, longshot Speed N The Tunnel moved up to challenge prompting MacDonald to yield the front past a :27.1 opener.
Speed N The Tunnel made the lead but only briefly as Wildfire Julie came on to take command through a :55.3 first half. As the field raced towards the far turn, Falls For You moved back to the outside from third and started her advance with elimination winners Up Front Hotsey and Buck I St Pat following second and third-over respectively.
Falls For You inched her way to the lead past three-quarters in 1:25 and began to draw clear as the field turned for home. In the late stages, Falls For You was all out with Up Front Hotsey and Buck I St Pat closing relentlessly.
Falls For You found the wire just in time and held on for a neck decision over Up Front Hotsey with Buck I St Pat finishing in third. Falls For You returned $13.20 for the win.
"She trotted perfect, which is good for me," said MacDonald. "She's got a perfect gait, and I know she's a real nice mare. I've seen her race a lot, and I know she's one of the top in the division, so I knew she was a contender. Jack [Moiseyev] told me she got caught in the two-hole last week and was running out on the left line turning for home and he got fighting her a little bit and she just rolled off. I tried to put myself in a position where I could let her drift out a little bit finishing, and that's what happened."
The victory was the first of the season in six outings for Falls For You, who is owned by the Fair Winds Farm Inc., Theodore Gewertz and Willow Pond LLC. and trained by Trond Smedshammer, who earlier in the evening captured the $324,694 Hudson Filly Trot at Yonkers. (Mohawk)
