Favorites prevailed in two of three Indiana Sires Stakes contests for freshman trotters Wednesday night, October 14 at Indiana Downs. Kara’s Secret and Msnaughtybynature won their respective $25,000 contests for two-year-old fillies while Bluebird Caviar pulled a mild upset in the lone colt division.
Tabbed the favorite in the first $25,000 division for fillies, Kara’s Secret and driver Joe Putnam left from post three and settled in sixth early. After a :29.4 opening quarter, Putnam moved the Keep It A Secret freshman first up, advancing to fourth by the half (1:01.4) and taking command from Skit Er Done and Ricky Macomber before the field reached three quarters (1:33.2). In front by two lengths at the top of the lane, Kara’s Secret pulled away by three and one-half lengths at the wire, trotting the mile in 2:03.3. SJ’s Cashreturn kicked home late for second while Skit Er Done was third.
Out of Pine Chip mare Gossip Columnist, Kara’s Secret is owned by Benaire Farm of Monrovia, Ind. The filly is trained by Dave White. The victory was the second of the season for Kara’s Secret, raising her earnings to $38,569.
Msnaughtybynature, the top filly in the division, continued to roll Wednesday in ISS action. Driven by Ron Wrenn, the Scramble Ranger lass took advantage of a two hole trip and used a :29.2 final panel to romp by seven and one-quarter lengths, stopping the timer in 2:02.3. Call Me Ching and Dan Shetler trotted home a distant second and Rockin Roxy finished third.
Owned by Melanie Wrenn and The Kales Company LLC, Msnaughtybynature has won eight of 11 starts this season. Trained by Peter Wrenn, the filly added another $12,500 to her bankroll, which now stands at $150,150. Winner of the $125,000 series one final, Msnaughtybynature will be the favorite to win the series two final, which also carries a $125,000 purse, set for October 24.
Bluebird Caviar and Ricky Macomber, sent off as the second choice, captured the $25,000 ISS division for freshman trotting colts Wednesday, hitting the wire three-quarters of length in front of Super Beat in 2:02.4. Butler Bulldog completed the trifecta. It was the third seasonal win for the Above The Bar-Perfectly Balanced gelding. Ron Burke trains Bluebird Caviar for Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi LLC, JJK Stables and Frank Baldachino. The freshman has earned $41,140 in nine starts this year.
