Despite frigid temperatures and blustery winds, Locamotion Baby and Maeve Hanover, the favorites, didn’t disappoint in two $16,000 divisions of the Blizzard Pacing Series for 3- and 4-year-old fillies and mares at Woodbine Thursday night.

In race 3, Randy Waples hustled 8-5 choice Locamotion Baby to the outside for a one-length win over the late-charging Blue Mist (Phil Hudon) in 1:56.2. A game Tryst Seelster (Roger Mayotte) hung on for third, while pacesetter Almost A Lady settled for fourth.

Locamotion Baby, a 4-year-old daughter of Camotion, is trained by Chad Schmiedge of Waterdown, Ontario and is owned by Richie Pat Bonvie Stables Inc of Lauderdale By The Sea, Fla. This was her second win in 33 starts and boosts her earnings to $70,917.

In the second contest, race 6, it was even-money choice Maeve Hanover, driven by Mario Baillargeon, who dug deep to maintain her lead over a strong challenge from Lady Onyx and Luc Ouellette. The 3-year-old Real Artist lass took the victory by a long nose in a new lifetime best of 1:56 for trainer Jack Darling, who co-owns Maeve Hanover along with Jack Daniel W. Smith. Real Jenna (Gord McKnight) stepped up for third.

Blizzard Pacing Series action returns with the second leg, next Thursday night at Woodbine, and and the top 10 point earners will earn the right to return for the $49,000 (est.) final on Jan. 17. (WEG)
