Fever at Indy Downs

Cabana Fever took home top prize in the $217,850 Kentuckiana Stallion Management Stake for two year old filly pacers Saturday, Aug. 19 at Indiana Downs. The Joe Seekman trainee paced to victory in 1:54.2 to collect her second win in as many starts.

The Real Desire filly started from the outside post in a scratch-shortened field of seven and was unhurried early for driver Ricky Macomber Jr. Glenby Farms Me And My Baby took command early, clicking off fractions of :28 and :58 with My Fave Wave sitting the pocket in second.

“She showed that she could get to the half in a minute and pace home in the last half,” Macomber said of the winner. “I was confident at the half.”

Macomber had Cabana Fever out and moving on the backstretch, picking up cover and racing third over as the field reached three quarters in 1:26.3. At the top of the stretch Me And My Baby faltered, and when Macomber asked his filly, she responded.

“When I asked, she responded real well. When I moved her, she had wicked speed,” the driver explained. “She’s real green, but she can go.”

My Fave Wave (Jate Lobell) and Go Ginny Go (Jenna’s Beach Boy) were unable to catch the winner, finishing second and third. Me And My Baby faded to fifth.

The victory knocked just over a full second off her mark, taken at Balmoral Park en route to winning a Hanover Stake division. Cabana Fever is owned in partnership by L & L Devisser, Sawgrass Farms and Helping Hands Stable. Her earnings now exceed $124,000.

“I just didn’t want to race her hard. The owners don’t want to push her,” Seekman said of the limited starts. “I thought she had a good chance. I was concerned if she was tight.”

Seekman said Cabana Fever will ship to Canada to compete in next week’s Shes A Great Lady eliminations.
