Field set for Battle

World champion Spirit Of A Shark, the fastest veteran gelding pacer ever on a half-mile track, has drawn post two and has been named the 5-2 morning line favorite in Saturday’s $125,000 Battle of Lake Erie at Northfield Park, the harness track located between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio.

Spirit Of A Shark, owned by the New York partnership of Cliff Siegel, Herbert Siegel, Lee Wasserman and John Fodera, set his record on Memorial Day, winning the $150,000 First State Pace at Harrington Raceway in Delaware. He is trained by Carl Cito, Jr., who calls on Greg Grismore to drive.

Last year’s Battle runner-up, Ponder, drew the outside post eight for the second consecutive year and has been named the 7-2 second choice. Defending champ Maltese Artist drew post six and is 10-1 on Director of Racing Gregg Keidel’s morning line. The third choice is Rebelman, an Indiana invader who drew the rail. Brett Miller has chosen to drive the 9-2 choice, instead of Maltese Artist and Whosurboy.

The Battle of Lake Erie is the 12th race on Northfield’s 14-race card, and has a scheduled post time of 11:05 PM Eastern. The Celebration of the Standardbred card, with total purses of over $336,000, has a first race post of 7:00 Eastern.
