The field for the Breeders Crown Pace is set after two eliminations were held at the Meadowlands Saturday night, with Holborn Hanover (1:48) and Lis Mara (1:48.1) leading the way into the July 29 championship.
Holborn Hanover, the 2004 Meadowlands Pace winner, pulled off an upset in the first elim, paying $25.40. Driver George Brennan, however, didn’t lack confidence in Holborn Hanover as he put the 5-year-old gelding on the front at the halfway mark. Stonebridge Regal launched a rally, but Holborn held on by one-half length over the firm but sloppy track..
Brett Robinson trains Holborn Hanover for owners John Fielding and Canamerica Capital Corp of Ontario.
Lisa Mara was on the front end for most of his race and scored over Ponder, another Bob McIntosh trainee (McIntosh also trains first elim runner-up Stonebridge Regal). Trained by Erv Miller and driven by Brian Sears, Lis Mara picked up his fourth victory in his last five starts for owners MJG Racing Stables Inc. and Louis Willinger.
The top five finishers from each elim advanced to the Breeders Crown Pace. Of the 13 horses entered, Mypanmar, Casimir Camotion and Hop Sing failed to make the cut. The field will include:
