Three preliminary divisions of the Maryland Sire Stakes for freshman trotters were contested at Rosecroft Raceway on Saturday night, and each of the races were worth a purse of $3,000. In the early races, Erio Hanover won by less than a length after drawing away by 13 through the middle half of the race. Driver-trainer Joe Offutt guided the Tejano colt through fractions of 30.2, 1:01.4 and 1:32.2, claiming victory in 2:04.2. Genevieve Louk of Pennsylvania owns the freshman trotter. Mr. Crazy was successful by a head in 2:04.0 under the guidance of driver Sam Belote III. The Tejano colt, trained by Bill Long for owner Crawford Rayne of Maryland, trotted gate-to-wire in 31.0, 1:03.0 and 1:33.1 with a 30.4 last quarter. In the division for freshman trotting fillies, Ornellix [$2.80, $2.40, $2.20] made a bold quarter-pole move for the lead after an opening fraction of 30.3. Driven by Vic Kirby for trainer Gary Cameron II, the Tejano filly took the field through well-rated middle quarters of 1:01.0 and 1:31.4 to score by a length-and-three-quarters in 2:02.1. Russell Williams of Pennsylvania owns Ornellix, who is now two-for-two lifetime. Brilliant Get Lost [$2.40, $2.10] sat in the pocket for second. The Go Get Lost filly, driven by John Wagner for lessee-trainer Syl King Jr. of Pennsylvania, tracked the leader alertly to cross under the wire close behind. After showing some early gate speed, Whitesville Donna [$2.40] held on for third in the $29.40 triple. The daughter of Meadow Crown was driven by David Hill III for trainer-owner Gary White of Maryland. Double Flip [$2.20, $2.10, $2.10] made it two in a row by winning a $16,000 division of the Maryland Standardbred Race Fund on Saturday night at Rosecroft. The three-year-old Badlands Hanover filly, co-owned by Winbak Farm and the Wagners, quarter-poled for the lead after a swift opening fraction of 28.2. Driven by John Wagner for trainer Manley Brown, Jr., Double Flip held steady on the front end through quarters of 57.0 and 1:25.3, winning by over three lengths in 1:53.4. Wild Retreat, the other half of the Winbak Farm owner-entry, finished second with Jeff Fout in the sulky, while Goddess’s Angel crossed under the wire third for driver Frank Milby. The trifecta paid $44.20. In the other $16,000 division for three-year-old pacing fillies, Betting Machine [$4.80, $2.60, $2.10] was best by half of a length in 1:53.2. Trained by George Teague Jr., the daughter of Bettor’s Delight paced first-over at the half, showing strong speed after opening fractions of 27.1 and 56.0. Driver Wayne Long guided the filly to the three-quarter pole in 1:24.4. Owned by Only Money Inc. and Teague Inc., Betting Machine won with a 28.3 last quarter, setting a new lifetime mark. After pacing second-over, Honeyland [$3.20, $2.10] finished second with Vic Kirby at her lines, and Spring Break [$2.20], driven by John Wagner, was third. The triple, coming in 6-5-1, paid $21.80.
