Passionate Glide, the divisional champion at two, turned in a dominant performance to win the $175,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Final for 3-year-old trotting fillies on Thursday night at the Meadowlands. Her mile in 1:52.4 was a stakes record, a personal best and only three-fifths of a second off the world record set by Continentalvictory in the 1996 Hambletonian.
Passionate Glide, a perfect three-for-three in 2006, finished 5 1/2 lengths ahead of Queen Serene. Passionate Glide’s entrymate, Simple Task, was third by 6 1/4 lengths.
“She grew up a lot and filled out quite a bit, she covers the more ground easier,” noted driver Ron Pierce, comparing the daughter of Yankee Glide to her freshman campaign.
“We were second-over for a while and then wound up first-up,” he said of the winning effort. “I put on the brakes big time that third quarter, and then we just stepped on the gas as we turned for home and then trotted away from them. She doesn’t need one (a trip) right now, but it’s nice to give her one. Right now I don’t see any boys out there that can lick her. I don’t see any boys that could go with her right now.”
“She looked good tonight,” said her trainer Jimmy Takter. “She has average gate speed. I don’t see why we have to rush her out of there too hard. She’s a strong girl and can really come home good.” Passionate Glide trotted a final quarter in :27.4.
Passionate Glide, the Dan Patch Award winner as 2-Year-Old Trotting Filly of the Year in 2005, had five wins and five seconds in 11 starts, wrapping up her freshman season with a victory in the $516,800 Breeders Crown final. Lifetime, she has banked $750,447 for Brittany Farms of Versailles, Ky. (Meadowlands)
