First-time winner at 55

Despite being pitched a shutout on the Meadowlands' New Years Eve matinee program, Cat Manzi secured his first-ever national dash championship with 727 winner's circle trips in 2005.



At age 55, Manzi became the oldest first-time winner of the title. He finished 27 wins ahead of runner-up Tony Morgan, with Mark MacDonald third. Manzi was also recently named the U.S. Harness Writers Association''s 2005 Driver of the Year.



"(Winning the dash title) is a neat thing to me," Manzi told harnessracing.com a couple of days before his season ended. "It's a great feeling to be able to accomplish this at my age."



Manzi also set a career single-season high with more than $8 million in purse earnings. With career earnings of more than $110 million, Manzi stands third on the all-time list behind only John Campbell and Mike Lachance.
