First foal of 2001 Pacer of the Year wins Saratoga qualifier

The 3-year-old filly pacer Bunny’s Legacy, the first foal of 2001 Pacer of the Year Bunny Lake, made her long-anticipated career debut Wednesday at Saratoga Harness Raceway, scoring easily in a qualifier. With trainer-driver John Stark Jr., Bunny’s Legacy won by six lengths in 2:02.1, rallying from fifth at the half and posting a final quarter of :29.1 to draw clear from her rivals.

A daughter of Western Hanover, Bunny’s Legacy did not race at two due to what Stark told harnessracing.com on Thursday he believed to be “knees that weren’t developed right.” Stark, who trained and co-owned the $2.8 million-winning Bunny Lake, did not have Bunny’s Legacy in his stable last year until October.

“She’s OK, but not like her mother though,” said Stark. “She has a long way to go. She’s not as big (as Bunny Lake). She’s good gaited—she got that from her mother—but I’ll have to wait until she starts racing to see what happens.”

Stark said Bunny’s Legacy will now be dropped right into the Saratoga entry box in a maiden event. He added that because the filly did not race as a freshman she has only been minimally staked in 2009 by owners Skip and Wendy Spring’s W Springtime Stable and Shannon Brott.

Bunny Lake was sold by the Springs and Stark at the 2006 Harrisburg Mixed Sale while she was in foal to Rocknroll Hanover, with Hanover Shoe Farms purchasing her for $400,000.
