Tweedle Dum continued his dominance at Pompano Park on Friday, winning the $25,000 first leg of the Mack Lobell Trotting Series in 1:54.2, although it took the photo finish camera to decide the winner. Driven from post seven by Walter Ross Jr., Tweedle Dum briefly dueled with Guy Gets Girl (Bruce Ranger) for the early lead, before clearing that rival on the first turn and trotting the opening quarter mile in :27.4.

Tweedle Dum hangs tough on the inside to prevail in the Mack Lobell over Dink Adoo.As the field trotted by the grandstand for the first time, Tweedle Dum was able to slow things down on the front end, passing the half-mile marker in :57.4 after covering the second panel in a leisurely :30.

The 6-year-old gelded son of Star Challenge remained unchallenged through a three-quarters split in 1:26.1, and was let out a notch entering the final turn, opening up his lead by nearly two lengths.

As the pocket-sitting Guy Gets Girl began to weaken at the head of the stretch, Dink Adoo (Wally Hennessey), who was rated along nicely in third-place, was angled off the pylons and began his late rush on the outside.

With the finish line approaching and his lead rapidly diminishing, Tweedle Dum dug in to hold off Dink Adoo in the final yards, prevailing by just a nose in a tight photo.

“That one scared me,” winning trainer Gordon Norris said from the winner’s circle. “I got a little worried there. That’s a tough horse that finished second; he made over $200,000 last year, so that’s not bad. He (Tweedle Dum) wasn’t as sharp tonight, but he still won,” Norris continued. “That’s a good mile, 1:54.2. We have confidence going into next week, and I feel we got a shot. That’s all you can ask for.”

Tweedle Dum returned $2.80, $2.10, $2.10 for the victory. Dink Adoo paid $2.20, $2.10 for second, while Guy Gets Girl checked in third, returning $2.10. Completing the order of finish was the lone mare in the field Victor’s Pursuit, Muscular, Battleshoe Victor, LF Sharp Score, Bossi Corner, Party Lad, and Curly Whirly.

Owned by Diane Morris and Alfred Brotter of Pompano Beach, Tweedle Dum pushed his career earnings mark over $230,000 with his victory in the Friday feature.

Tweedle Dum has visited the winner’s circle in 22 of his last 26 starts, and the gelding entered the harness racing record books on Feb. 2 when equaling the world record for older geldings on a five-eighths mile track, winning the $15,000 Mack Lobell Preview in 1:53.2.

The Mack Lobell Trotting Series continues with the $25,000 second leg on Feb. 16 and will conclude with the $75,000 added final on Feb. 26. (Pompano Park press release)
