First race-off in 11 years decides 38th Jugette

Good News Lady paced an individual final quarter of :26.3 to outsprint Sprig Hanover down the stretch to win the 38th renewal of the $300,475 Jugette for 3-year-old filly pacers in a two-horse race-off Wednesday afternoon at the Delaware, Ohio fairgrounds.

After winning the first heat and then making a break at the start of the second heat, driver Greg Grismore was content to take a tuck second behind the John Campbell-driven Sprig Hanover, who had captured the second heat and was awarded the inside post in the race-off. It was the first third heat in the Jugette since the 1997 edition won by Stienam's Place.

Campbell and Sprig Hanover set slow fractions in the race-off, reaching the quarter in :31.4, the half in 1:05.4 and the three quarters in 1:38.2. Grismore tipped from second around the final turn and the chase was on, and Good News Lady won out by a neck at the wire in 2:05.1.

"What a pleasure she is to drive and what an honor it is to win this race in Ohio," said an emotional Grismore, a Bluffton, Ohio native, in the winner's circle.

Trained by Jimmy Takter, the winning daughter of Western Ideal is owned by Brittany Farms, Val D'Or Farms and Christina Takter. After going winless her first 12 starts of the year, her two wins in the Jugette increased her seasonal earnings to $464,248 and lifetime bankroll to $695,722.

The first heat of the Jugette was raced for a purse of $96,152, the second heat carried a purse of $144,228, and the race-off was a winner-take-all event for $60,095.
