Flo finally found George

August 24, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Flo Rice found her brother George after being separated more than 60 years, and to commemorate the happy occasion her son, Joe, named a filly pacer he shared ownership in with trainer Alex Kavoleff “Flo Found George.” With five wins in 12 starts this year, Flo Found George has earned more than $58,000, and she will look to add to that total when she goes postward in Saturday’s Fan Hanover consolation at Mohawk Racetrack.

In a scenario suitable for a Hollywood screenplay, Flo Rice’s search for her long-separated brother George was successful when she finally found her sibling about two years ago.

“Flo is Joe’s mother and George is her brother,” Kavoleff explained to harnessracing.com of the name of the 3-year-old daughter of Dream Away originally named Cold Cape Cod. “They were in an orphanage as kids and they got separated. Joe and I bought this filly three years ago (for $22,000) and we take turns naming horses. At first I thought, ‘What?’”

Ironically, Flo and George had lived their entire lives in New Jersey about an hour away from each other. When the two were reunited George was in a nursing home in ill health. He died about six months later.

“Joe’s dad wanted to investigate and find George somewhere, and when they finally found him he was in a nursing home,” said Kavoleff. “(Flo) thought she’d have to take care of him, but meanwhile they found out he had done quite well for himself and had a lot of money.”

The filly Flo Found George was unraced at two and has a mark of 1:52 set in July at the Meadowlands. She finished sixth in her Fan Hanover elimination, and has drawn post one in the consolation

“She just missed by a nose (of making the final). She got away bad in the rain and fog that night. It was nasty,” Kavoleff said. “I hope she’s the best in the consolation. She has the Simcoe after this so she’ll stay in Canada.”
