Florida horsemen file lawsuit

Return Home
May 16, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The Florida Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association has filed a lawsuit against The Isle Casino & Racing, alleging that The Isle, which operates racing at Pompano Park, has refused to give the horsemen their fair share of the slots proceeds. The lawsuit also asks the state to revoke The Isle’s slots license until the horsemen have a contract.

The lawsuit states that Pompano Park had offered the horsemen 4 percent from the first $100 million in slots revenue and 2 percent of any additional revenue. Horsemen racing at Gulfstream Park receive 6.75 percent of slots revenue up to $200 million, and a 12.6 percent share when that figure is reached.

One other difference between the situation facing harness horsemen and Thoroughbred horsemen is that under state law, Gulfstream Park had to negotiate a slots agreement with its horsemen before its machines became operational. There is no such provision in the law for harness horsemen.

The Florida Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association has been negotiating with The Isle for several months, and several weeks ago retained the Miami law firm of Tew Cardenas to handle all negotiations.
