Florida lawsuit filed

Return Home
November 16, 2004 Send To A Friend  | Print View

A lawsuit has been filed in Florida on behalf of opponents of Amendment 4, which calls for voters in Broward and Miami-Dade counties to decide their own fate of adding slot machines to the seven pari-mutuel tracks and jai-alai frontons in those two counties.

The lawsuit is questioning the validity of about 78,000 absentee ballots cast in Broward County, which were discovered late on election night. About 94 percent of the absentee votes were "yes" votes and six percent were "no" votes, which opponents claim is a "statistical anomaly" that should raise alarms.

The final vote total showed Amendment 4 passing by a margin of 119,000 votes out of 7.14 million cast. Opponents are now hoping that a recount would negate enough votes to bring the margin down to less than one-half of one percent, which would trigger an automatic recount.
