Florida-based owner Ernst Niemann Jr. died Tuesday, Dec. 22. He was 74.
Mr. Niemann, who lived in Pompano Beach, was an avid horse lover and owner. Upon retiring in 1993, he moved from New Hyde Park, N.Y. to South Florida for the warmth of the sunshine and to be closer to his beloved horses and son, Ernie, then a trainer-driver.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Jan. 12, 1935, Mr. Niemann was a graduate of St. John's College and worked for 3M for 35 years.
Mr. Niemann was an avid sportsman and, combining this with his love and belief in youth, he used his "spare time," to participate in youth softball and basketball programs for many years in both Nassau and Suffolk County.
His passion for horses was, indeed, strong and, although he never owned a world champion, he did own Bronze Star, a Florida Breeder Stakes winner (for Bruce Ranger) with a mark of p, 3, 1:54.4.
Besides Ranger, his favorite horsemen were Stanley Dancer and Wally Hennessey, describing both as "great horsemen and great gentleman, as well."
Mr. Niemann also had high praise for Steve Trites, "an all around horseman, if there ever was one." Trites trained the Niemann horses when his son, Ernie III, became paddock judge and identifier at Pompano Park.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Johanna, a son, Ernie III, a daughter, Monica (Gomez) and two grandchildren, Claudia and Mateo (Gomez) of Olney, Md.
Funeral arrangements are pending. (Pompano Park)
