Flurry of action at Vernon

August 30, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Vernon Downs was a beehive of activity on Tuesday as the historic central New York harness track continued to prepare for the resumption of live racing this Thursday night. Despite a steady rain, an inquisitive and enthusiastic turnout attended the track’s Open House program that featured seven qualifying races, including a 2:05 performance over a “sloppy” track by the Scott Schofield-driven pacer Harlem Meer.

While fans were checking out new high-tech features, such as flat-screen TVs and state-of-the-art self-service betting terminals in the renovated clubhouse, adjustments were being made to an upgraded sound system, and workmen were busy putting the finishing touches on a variety of projects throughout the physical plant.

Several media representatives were also on hand to get the latest updates from key track personnel.

“Everyone is working very hard to get things ready for Thursday night’s re-opening of Vernon Downs,” said Jason Settlemoir, vice-president of racing and simulcasting. “We’re all looking forward to the beginning of quality horse racing at this venerable seven-eighths mile track.”

Vernon, which last offered live racing in July of 2004, is scheduled to offer 30 racing cards between Thursday and Nov. 25 with a purse plan estimated at $1.2 million. Each nightly program during the track’s 53rd season will start at 6:50. Admission and parking will be free. (Vernon Downs)
