Foiled Again, driven by Yannick Gingras, became the richest pacer of all-time when he posted the 14-1 upset to take this year's edition of the $787,000 Canadian Pacing Derby on Saturday evening at Mohawk, part of the Metro Pace undercard.
The 63-time winner surpassed Gallo Blue Chip's record of $4,260,959. The 7-year-old son of Dragon Again now has career earnings pf $4,351,994.
Golden Receiver (Andy Miller) blasted off the gate from post four and led his nine rivals past the opening quarter in a quick :25.2. We Will See (Ron Pierce) was in the pocket with Aracache Hanover (Doug McNair) still stalking on the outside. As the older pacers headed towards the half, the battle was on as Golden Receiver refused to allow Aracache Hanover strike the front. The pair went toe-to-toe past the half in a blistering :52.2, the fastest half in the history of the Campbellville oval.
Around the final turn, Bettor Sweet (David Miller) went three wide around Aracache Hanover with post-time favorite, Betterthancheddar tracking him.
Gingras used a ground-saving trip along the pylons and found daylight at the top of the stretch. Turning for home, Golden Receiver began to tire as Foiled Again, Betterthancheddar and Bettor Sweet were all within striking distance.
In deep stretch, Foiled Again split in-between Bettor Sweet and Betterthancheddar to score the victory by a neck in 1:48.3. Betterthancheddar finished second with Bettor Sweet finished third.
"This is a great accomplishment by all the connections and by Ronnie Burke to keep this horse so good for so many years,” Gingras said following the win. "I can't say enough about this horse. He's been a once in a lifetime horse for anybody and to be able to become the richest pacer of all-time in a race like this is unbelievable and it shows what a great horse he is.
"I was in a tough spot early, I was sitting eight along the cones and I took my shot up the inside and I got lucky. You're better off lucky than good and I was able to shake loose at the top of the stretch and he did the rest.”
Trained by Ron Burke, Foiled Again has crafted a 5-6-3 record this season from 17 starts for owners Burke Racing Stable LLC, Weaver Bruscemi LLC and JJK Stables LLC. (WEG)
