According to news reports, Richard Shapiro, former chairman of the California Horse Racing Board and the son of Marvin Shapiro, who operated harness meets at Western Harness Racing at Hollywood Park, has revealed that he has been "devastated" financially by the $50-billion Ponzi scheme orchestrated by Bernard Madoff.
Shapiro resigned as chairman of hte California Horse Racing Board on Dec. 1, four days after he learned that he had lost his savings with Madoff.
