Former Michigan-based horseman John Perttunen died Tuesday, May 20, following surgery for lung cancer. He was 45. Mr. Perttunen’s father, Norm, is the patrol judge at Hazel Park Raceway, while his brother, Eric, is a state steward in
Mr. Perttunen won his first race in 1979 at the age of 16, winning 14 of his 33 starts that year. He last drove in 1993, finishing his career with 648 victories and $2.3 million in purse earnings. Most recently he was working as a truck driver.
Besides his father and brother, Mr. Perttunen is survived by his mother, Dorothy; his special longtime friend, Linda Mulrooney; a brother, Markus; nieces Ashley, Emma and Nichole; and nephews Ryan and Michael.
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, May 22, from 6-7 p.m. at the Faulmann & Walsh Golden Rule Funeral Home,
