Scott Alberg, who sold his last Standardbred race horse a few years ago, was a big winner at the Meadowlands Saturday night without sending out a horse to race. Alberg captured the $50,000 first prize in the National Harness Handicapping Championship.

The second edition of the contest was held Saturday night at the Meadowlands. All it took for Alberg to win was one big bet. He put $100 to win on Marti's Arti in the seventh race and the $28 win payoff gave Alberg a $1,400 payday, which vaulted the resident of Washington Township, N.J., into first place.

Gordon Waterstone, associate editor of The Horseman And Fair World magazine and a contributor to www.harnessracing.com, finished 29th in the field of 109 players.
