The Thoroughbred Times has reported on its web site that Maryland Jockey Club president Chris Dragone has been fired and will be replaced by longtime harness racing executive Tom Chuckas. Magna Entertainment Corp. chairman Frank Stronach confirmed the appointment of Chuckas, the story said. Dragone, 48, lasted less than six months in the job. He had been hired to replace popular former president Lou Raffetto, who Stronach dismissed when Magna bought out the remaining interest in Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course from a partnership led by former owner Joe De Francis.
The Times story said that Stronach was reached Tuesday in Moscow, Russia, and said the move will be made after the Preakness. “Chris is a nice fellow, but we thought [Chuckas] had more experience,” Stronach said.
Chuckas spent 11 years as CEO of Cloverleaf Enterprises, which operates Rosecroft Raceway. Chuckas left Cloverleaf on Feb. 29, and he has worked as an adviser to Stronach since May 1, the story added. Since 2000 Magna Entertainment has had five different chief executives with Stronach assuming the role on an interim basis three times. Magna still runs the racing operation at The Meadows under a contract with Millennium Gaming, the track's owner.
